A windshield cover that's too small leaves a frozen strip along the edge. One that's far too big flaps in the wind and won't seal at the doors. Two measurements and a minute with a tape measure settle it.
What you need
- A soft tape measure (a sewing tape is ideal because it bends over the glass).
- Your car parked on level ground, doors closed.
Step 1: Measure the width
Measure across the widest part of the windshield, which is usually the bottom edge just above the wipers. Go from the rubber seal on one side to the rubber seal on the other, following the curve of the glass rather than pulling the tape straight.
Step 2: Measure the height
Measure up the middle of the glass, from the bottom edge where the wipers rest to the top edge where the glass meets the roof. Again, follow the curve.
Step 3: Add the overlap
A cover needs to reach past the glass so its edges, magnets and door flaps sit on the body of the car. As a rule of thumb, look for a cover that's at least a few inches bigger than your glass in both directions. That margin is what stops wind getting underneath.
Will a 61 × 47 in cover fit?
Our Magnetic Windshield Frost Cover has a windshield panel of about 61 × 47 in (155 × 120 cm). Compare it with your measurements:
| Your glass measures | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Comfortably smaller than 61 × 47 in | Good fit. Typical of most SUVs, crossovers and minivans. |
| Much smaller, as on a compact car | It still works, but the cover overlaps the hood and roof more than it needs to. |
| Within a couple of inches of 61 × 47 in, or larger | Too tight. The edges won't reach the body with enough overlap. Look for an XL truck or van cover instead. |
Not sure? Email your two measurements and your car's make, model and year to support@tidymile.store before you order and we'll tell you straight whether it fits.
Other things that affect fit
- Magnets need steel. On aluminum or plastic body panels the magnets won't grip, so the door flaps do the holding. Check your hood with a fridge magnet if you're unsure.
- Wipers. Leave them down. The cover goes over them.
- Mirror covers are elastic, so they stretch over most mirror sizes.
