How to Get Dog Hair Out of Your Car (Carpet, Seats and Cargo Area)

Rubber pet hair detailer

Vacuums are great at loose dirt and terrible at dog hair. Short, stiff hairs work their way into car carpet like splinters, and the vacuum glides right over them. The fix is to loosen the hair first, then vacuum it up.

Why dog hair sticks to car carpet

Automotive carpet is a tight loop or cut pile, and short coarse hair slides in between the fibers and hooks in place. Static from fabric seats holds hair too. Suction alone can't pull it back out, so you need friction to drag it to the surface.

Tools, by what they're good at

Tool Best on Notes
Rubber pet hair detailer Carpet, floor mats, cloth seats, cargo liners Rubber grips and rolls hair into clumps. Reusable, nothing to refill.
Vacuum with a crevice tool Everything, after loosening Picks up the clumps and gets the seat seams.
Lint roller Cloth seats and headliner, light hair Fast for a touch-up, but you'll go through sheets.
Damp microfiber cloth Leather and vinyl Hair doesn't embed in leather, so a wipe is enough.
Detailing brush Vents, seams, around the console Flicks hair out of tight spots for the vacuum to catch.

The method

  1. Take the floor mats out and do them separately on the ground.
  2. Vacuum once quickly to remove loose dirt and grit.
  3. Loosen the hair. Use short, firm strokes with a rubber detailer, working toward you in one direction. Hair rolls up into clumps.
  4. Vacuum again to pick up the clumps.
  5. Do the seams and corners with a detailing brush and the crevice tool.
  6. Wipe leather or vinyl with a damp microfiber cloth.

Test any tool on a hidden patch of carpet or seat first, and go gently on delicate fabrics and the headliner.

Our Pet Hair Detailer is a rubber tool made for step 3. For the vents and seams in step 5, the 13-piece detailing brush set covers most gaps.

Keep the hair from getting there

  • Cover where your dog rides. A covered back seat platform keeps most hair, mud and claw marks off the upholstery and out of the footwell carpet, and the cover wipes or vacuums clean. See the Back Seat Extender for Dogs.
  • Brush your dog before the trip, outside, especially during shedding season.
  • Keep a detailer in the door pocket and do a two-minute pass after each trip, before the hair embeds.

Riding with your dog a lot? The Dog Ride Kit pairs the extender and the pet hair detailer. And if your dog slides off the seat, read how to stop your dog falling into the footwell.
