How to Clean the Inside of Your Windshield Without Streaks

Interior windshield cleaning wand

The inside of the windshield is the glass most people never clean, and it's the one that causes the most glare. Sun or headlights hit the haze and the whole windshield turns milky. Here's how to get it clear and keep it that way.

Where the haze comes from

  • Off-gassing from plastics. Dashboards and trim release compounds, especially when the car sits in the sun, and they settle on the glass as a film.
  • Breath and humidity. Moisture condenses on cold glass and leaves residue as it dries.
  • Fingers and smoke. Every touch leaves oil, and smoke or vape residue builds up fast.

That film also gives fog something to cling to, which is why a dirty windshield fogs up faster on cold, wet mornings.

What you need

  • Two clean microfiber cloths or pads: one to clean, one to dry
  • An automotive glass cleaner. If you have aftermarket window tint, use an ammonia-free cleaner.
  • Something to reach the low corners: a windshield wand, or a lot of patience

The two-towel method

  1. Park in the shade. Cleaner flashes off hot glass and leaves streaks.
  2. Dry-wipe first to lift loose dust, so you aren't just moving dirt around.
  3. Spray the cloth, not the glass. Overspray on the dashboard leaves spots and drips into vents.
  4. Wipe in one direction, say side to side, working in sections.
  5. Buff with the dry cloth straight away, in the other direction, say top to bottom. If a streak appears, you'll see which pass caused it.
  6. Do the edges last. The bottom corners where the glass meets the dash are where most haze hides.

Reaching the bottom of the windshield

The problem with the inside of a windshield is the angle: the lowest part sits far forward under a steep slope, behind the dash. From the driver's seat your wrist can't bend that far, so most people leave a dirty band along the bottom.

A long-handled pad fixes that. Our Interior Windshield Cleaning Wand has an extendable handle and a pivoting head with a washable microfiber pad, so you can reach the base of the glass from your seat. Use one pad wet and swap or flip to dry for the buff.

Keeping it clear

  • Clean the inside once a month, more often in winter.
  • Use a sunshade on hot days to slow down off-gassing.
  • Wash the microfiber without fabric softener, which leaves a film.
  • On foggy mornings, turn on the A/C with the defroster. It dries the air and clears the glass faster.
